LEADERSHIP

Tiffany Cowan (publisher)

Tiffany Cowan is a junior in the School of Foreign Service majoring in International Politics with a concentration in Foreign Policy and Policy Processes. She is also pursuing a minor in Mandarin Chinese. She joined the Caravel as a copy editor during her first semester at Georgetown and served as Copy Chief before becoming Publisher in the spring of 2023. Her academic interests include U.S.-China relations, human trafficking, geopolitics, and security.

SALMAH ELMASRY (EDITOR-IN-CHIEF)

Salmah Elmasry is a junior in the SFS intending to major in International Politics and complete a certificate in Arab studies. She joined the Caravel in her first semester at Georgetown as a writer for the United States and Gender sections and is currently the editor of the Middle East and Central Asia section. Her academic interests include democracy in the Middle East and women, peace, and security. Read what she’s written here.

Alex Missen (EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR)

Alex Missen is a junior in the School for Foreign Service. He started writing for the Compass World and Eastern Europe & Russia sections in fall of 2020. Read what he’s written here.

claire cheng (director of digital operations)

Claire Cheng is a senior in the School of Foreign Service with a major in International Political Economy and minor in Philosophy. She joined the Caravel in fall 2020 as writer for the USA section and Compass World. Her academic interests include rural and urban education policy, restructuring global governance, and imperial legacies in Asia. Read what she’s written here.

EDITORS

NICHOLAS VOLTAGGIO (EER)

Nicholas Voltaggio is a junior in the School of Foreign Service majoring in International Political Economy. He began writing for the Eastern Europe and Russia section in fall 2021, before becoming an editor for the section in fall 2022. Nick calls Morristown, New Jersey home. Within the region and beyond, he's interested in studying and writing about challenges to democracy and development - specifically the ways in which the rising backlash to globalization intersects with democratic backsliding and executive consolidation. Read what he’s written here.

GITANJALI REDDY (IAP)

Gitanjali Reddy is a junior in the School of Foreign Service studying Science, Technology, and International Affairs with a concentration in Security. She is also earning a Biology Minor and Diplomatic Studies Certificate. Gitanjali wrote for the Africa section in the Fall of 2022 before becoming the Editor of Compass Futures and writer for the Indo-Asia-Pacific section in the Spring of 2023. Her academic interests include international security, emerging technology, genetics, and geography. Read what she’s written here

eleanor apps (COPY CHIEF)

Eleanor Apps is a freshman in the School of Foreign Service planning to major in International Politics with a concentration in International Security. She joined the Caravel in fall 2023 as a copy editor and is excited to keep working with the copy team. Her other academic interests include Latin American studies, international history, and journalism.

elizabeth koenck (AFR)

Elizabeth Koenck is a freshman in the School of Foreign Service intending to major in International Politics. She joined the Caravel in her first semester at Georgetown as a writer for the Middle East and Central Asia Section and is currently the editor of the Africa section. Her academic interests include women’ rights, democracy, and political and economic development.


Zane Nagel (AFR)

Zane Nagel is a sophomore in the School of Foreign Service majoring in International Politics. He joined the Caravel in Fall 2022 as a staff writer for the Africa section. His academic interests include researching non-state actors in the Sahel and Central Africa & reading about public transportation policy. Outside the classroom, you can find Zane exploring the DC Metro system or watching basketball.

katherine hart (WEUC)

Katherine Hart is a freshman in the School of Foreign Service majoring in International Politics with a minor in Russian. She joined the Caravel as an Eastern Europe and Russia writer during her first semester at Georgetown. She currently serves as Social Chair and Western Europe and Canada editor. Her academic interests include Eastern European politics, untraditional forms of warfare, and national security law. 

KATIE KOSS (MECA)

Kathryn Koss is a sophomore in the SFS majoring in Culture and Politics. She joined the Caravel in her second semester at Georgetown as a writer for Middle East and Central Asia and is currently the editor of the Middle East and Central Asia section.

melis akkum (compass money)

Melis Akkum is a freshman in the School of Foreign Service intending to major in International Economics. She joined the Caravel in Fall 2023 as a writer for the Middle East and Central Asia section and became editor of Compass Money in Spring 2024. Her academic interests include the relationship between political crisis and economic policy, Europe and the Mediterranean, and statistics.

ISAK DAI (ELECTIONS)

Isak Dai is a junior in the College studying Government. He became the editor of the Elections section in the Fall of 2023.

 

thomas clauson (compass world)

Thomas Clauson is a sophomore in the School of Foreign Service majoring in International Politics, specializing in Foreign Policy and Policy Processes. Combined with a minor in Economics and a certification in Diplomatic Studies, he began writing for the Western Europe and Canada section in Fall 2023. His academic interests involve European affairs and geopolitics.

maggie yang (opinion)

Maggie Yang is a freshman in the School of Foreign Service. She intends to major in Regional and Comparative Studies with a focus on Asia and minor in Chinese. She joined the Caravel in fall 2023 as a staff writer for the Indo-Asia-Pacific section and is currently the editor of the Opinion section.

DANIEL GREILSHEIMER (MECA)

Daniel Greilsheimer is a sophomore in the SFS. He was a staff writer for the Middle East and Central Asia section before becoming an editor for MECA in the Fall of 2023.

 

kayla yu (compass gender)

Kayla Yu is a sophomore in the School of Foreign Service studying Global Business with a minor in Statistics. Kayla wrote for the Indo-Asia-Pacific section in Fall 2023 before becoming the Editor for Compass Gender in the Spring of 2024. Her academic interests include historical memory in East Asia and environmental sustainability. 

rachel rochford (LAC)

Rachel Rochford is a freshman in the SFS. She joined the Caravel during her first semester as a writer for the Eastern Europe and Russia section. Her academic interests include Eastern Europe, Russia, and Central Asia, foreign policy processes, and security.

 

saisha dani (compass world)

Saisha Dani is a junior in the School of Foreign Service majoring in International Politics and minoring in Justice and Peace Studies. She joined the Caravel in the spring of 2022 as a writer for the Indo-Asia-Pacific section and then the Middle East and Central Asia section. Her academic interests include U.S. foreign policy, Middle Eastern politics, and conflict prevention.

rishi dinesh (IAP)

Rishi Dinesh is a freshman in the School of Foreign Service studying International Politics with an intended certificate in European Studies. He wrote for the Indo-Asia-Pacific section in Fall 2023 before becoming its co-Editor in Spring 2024. He is interested in studying emerging security challenges such as artificial intelligence and climate change.

Josephine Balistreri is a sophomore in the SFS majoring in International Political Economy.  She joined the Caravel in Fall 2023 as a copy editor, and her other academic interests include women in politics, international law, and human rights.
