The former Prime Minister of Portugal José Socrates has been remanded in custody on charges of corruption, tax fraud, and money laundering. Having served in office from 2005 to 2011, Mr. Socrates was detained after returning from Paris on Friday, but denies any guilt. According to his lawyer, João Araujo, an appeal will be made against the decision. Formal charges will come at the end of the investigation, which may last up to eight months.
