A Bright Future Ahead for Morocco’s Solar Power Industry

Morocco’s Noor solar power plant signals a true milestone for renewable energy in North Africa. The Noor Plant, which will be fully completed in 2020, will open its first phase, Noor 1,  in November in the city of Ourzazate. Once completed, the plant will generate 580 megawatts of energy, enough to power one million households. The first phase will have 500,000 mirrors and will span 6,178 acres of land, enough to produce approximately 160 megawatts of energy.

The power plant represents a significant step towards energy independence for a country which imports more than 91 percent of its energy. Not only does the power plant provide an economic benefit through decreased imports, but it also helps to secure energy stability for the country. The Noor project is a promising start for harnessing the potential of solar power, not only for Morocco but also for the rest of North Africa.
